Giving and Taking V - Lye

Video, 21 minutes
2022

Produced for MONUMENT Vestlandsutstillingen 2022, curated by Espen Johansen.

The video shows the process of making lye from birch ashes, and material tests performed with the lye. Lye is basic material that has both transformative and destructive characteristics, traditionally it has been used to make soap, bleach hair, bleach wood and in cooking (for instance Norwegian lutefisk), and more recently used for bio cremation (alkaline hydrolysis) of human and pet remains, a more sustainable kind of technique compared to traditional cremation.

MONUMENT Vestlandstustillingen 2022 was shown in Kube Jugenstilstenteret in Ålesund, Rogaland Art Centre, Haugesund Billedgalleri,  Sogn og Fjordane Art Museum in Førde, Kunsthuset Kabuso in Øystese and Kunstgarasjen i Bergen.

The artists taking part were Cecilia Jonsson, Christoffer Eide, Dominique Hurth, Erin Sexton, Henrik Koppen, Icaro Zorbar, Jasmine Børresen, Kari Hjertholm, Kobie Nel, Joel Danielsson & Louise Öhman, Mathijs van Geest, Petra Dahlstrøm, Serina Erfjord, Stacy Brafield, Susanne Steen Christensen, Tora Endestad Bjørkheim

This work was realized with the support of Vestlandsutstillingen and Bildende kunstneres vederlagsfond.
